Paramore's NEW Music Video 'Now'

Posted by Sedatephobia Magazine on 5:54 PM

New year, new album, new sound. Let us know what you guys think! Enjoy!

I'm sure Paramore is going to get a lot of grief due to this video, and most likely their new album as a whole due to the change in sound. THIS is what I call growth and progression. There's a huge difference between a band growing and changing as people and selling out. No, they obviously don't sound like the "old Paramore", but that doesn't mean it's a bad thing. We personally love the new sound and are looking forward to all that's to come with it.

Crown Point: Curtains EP Review

Posted by Sedatephobia Magazine on 12:08 PM

Let's do a little recap of our review on the band's previous EP "Wolves"

"The EP starts off with the song “Back to You”, something that might remind of you of the alt rock you'd typically hear on your local radio station. Even though it's more of a basic sound, it doesn't necessarily mean it's a bad thing. Not only is this name of the EP titled “Wolves”, but so is the second track. Typically, when a track is the same name as the album, you'd go to think that it might be the song that really makes the album worth listening to; I'm not so sure that's the case here. The following track “Lethal Dose” is a bit refreshing after listening to the first two. It hits just a little harder, and has more of an “edgy” sound to it. Then, just when you think the EP is going to get a little faster, and possibly heavier, Crown Point pulls out a slow song. It's your typical lovey-dovey type song, if you couldn't already tell from the title. The band continues to keep it slow with “Easier Said Than Done”, picking up the pace just slightly. I'd have to say it's a rather nice transition between the last song and what's to come next. Even though it's another slow song, this one seems to have an entirely different feeling than the rest of the album. You can feel so much more raw emotion in “Disappear”. How does that saying go? Save the best for last? If that's the case, that's definitely what Crown Point chose to do. This music obviously isn't for everyone, but if you're into the more modern/alt-rock, Crown Point is a band you might want to look into. Give them a chance, even if that means just checking out one song.

Wolves was released back in 2011. Now the band's back with their newest release Curtains.
To say the least, this band has taken a huge step in-between EP's.

Let's get to the actual review, shall we?

Curtains EP Review
First thing's first. How would you like to get a taste of the band's new sound?

Crown Point - Curtains by SedatephobiaMagazine

If you were to listen to Wolves and Curtains back to back without knowing they were the same band, I'm not too sure you'd ever guess it was. Unless you were to notice similarity in vocal tone, of course. As you know, a lot of artists have the issue of not making the second album quite as good as the first. In this situation, Crown Point has come back stronger than ever. This is music that shows true potential and hard work.

The album starts off strong with the song “Curtains Drawn”, which you might have already listened to above. It was definitely fish bait for me, making me not want, but need to hear more. A reminder of our previous review wasn't to show criticism, but to show progress. I can see great things in the future for this band, and we're looking forward to following them on their journey. Crown Point did anything but fall short of succeeding with this album and should be very proud. If you liked the preview songs and want to listen to something that shows true passion and emotion, Crown Point's EP Curtains is definitely something you'll want to pick up.
________________________________________________________________________________

"We were still finding our musical voice [as a band] and that is reflected in the overall poppy sound of the album," says Stafford, discussing the differences between Wolves and Curtains. "We decided to self-produce Curtains rather than bring someone else in on the project. We believe that we have truly fleshed out our sound now and, really, didn't see how bringing someone else into the fold would be a positive creative experience when we have such a defined and deliberate sound."

Further elaborating on Curtains and their choice to self-produce, Davidson says, "We wanted to capture the dynamics and energy of our live show. We produced Curtains in a way that retained the accessibility, yet shed a lot of the pop gloss of Wolves. We experimented a lot on this album, from time signature changes to vocal effects to massive guitar delays, and we feel that we're much closer to defining Crown Point's signature sound."

Though the two years between releases wasn't the initial plan for the band, the time did help the outfit grow. Davidson fell into medical peril after severing his tongue on a mountain bike excursion, having to re-learn how to sing once the tip of his tongue was re-attached. This amounted to some downtime for Crown Point. But, once Davidson was cleared to sing again, the rejuvenated band once again did what they always do: hit the road and kept writing songs.

With more than enough songs to record two albums at their disposal, the band decided to record another EP, with the debut full-length scheduled for release in the summer of 2013.

"It's all timing," says Stafford. "Wolves came out in October of 2010 and we didn't want to have more than two years between releases. Jon riding his bike [and injuring himself] last summer didn't help that."

"Rather than wait another six or eight months until the full-length album was finished, we opted to put out a well-rounded 7-song EP with eight tracks, including a radio edit of 'The Room,' and hit the road to tour in support of it," Davidson adds.

Taking its name from the album's opening track, "Curtains Drawn," a highly-energetic, melodic rock song, a la Muse, Curtains chronicles the metaphorical Curtains that so often stay closed on people's lives, keeping them entrenched in darkness, fear, and apathy.

"The album as a whole deals with some pretty dark themes, such as terminal illness, death, war, religious imperialism, freedom of choice, and how little time we have on this earth," explains Davidson. "And, yet, does it with a beam of hope."

Writing as a band, rather than as on Wolves, where Stafford and Davidson would bring in their own songs and made them into Crown Point numbers, Curtains was written as a collective unit, with give and take and compromise occurring for the betterment of the final album.

"That's the great thing about working with these guys. What I heard in my head isn't nearly as good as what you will hear on Curtains. When you have four like-minded driven people, I think that everyone is going to bring something that the others don't expect," recalls Stafford. "That was an exciting part of this album, watching it flourish with creative input from everyone involved."

"Each band member has pretty disparate influences," elaborates Davidson. "Everything from The Rolling Stones to Live to Thrice to Tool to The Receiving End Of Sirens to Awolnation to Needtobreathe, and certainly hints of all these bands show up in our music."

Quite a diverse music palette between the four members, and yet Curtains, with its diversity, came out quite cohesive. From the beautiful grace of "The Room," a simmering, late-night or blurry-eyed morning pop number, through the revved up, danceable pop-rock of "Afterbirth," and to the subdued "Head First," the album doesn't play on one genre or sound, but sounds completely Crown Point.

"We were able to tie together a lot of different styles in a cohesive and unified way," says Stafford. "From the completely stripped down 'Records On The Radio' to the straight-up danceable alt/rock of 'Afterbirth,' the album makes sense."

"We really like the way that we were able to create a bonafide rock record without the use of heavy guitars. It retains rock, alternative, indie, and pop elements while creating a sound that we'd like to think is pretty unique," Davidson furthers.

"Set Fire" soars with big hooks and a sunny melody, a rocking rhythm section pushing the song to new heights, while "Better Run For Cover" tones it down a bit for a more introspective, but equally powerful number.

"We used a ton of interesting vocal effects to replicate what we do live. We added electronic elements. We added driving, danceable kick beats. We layered guitars and vocals, yet for the most part, we stuck to creating an album that we can replicate live," discusses Davidson, when asked how the band plans to pull the record off live.

"We made an album that really draws from our unique musical backgrounds and tastes. We didn't try to pigeonhole ourselves into a specific genre, but rather let the songs and sound go where they belong," says Russell, when asked to sum up the record. "I think both Jon and I are very deliberate and focused of writing songs that make sense in that regard. A song like 'The Room,' for instance. You can hear just in the music that it is a very longing, emotionally charged song. Skip to 'Afterbirth' and right off the bat, you know that the song is a poignant and focused arrow of a song. Listen to the lyrics in every song and you will hear echoes of unity in the music behind them."

When asked what surprised him the most about the making of this record, Davidson is quick to comment that it is, "The way that, despite the different songwriting and stylistic approaches among the seven songs, everything came together to create a pretty cohesive record."

"Both lyrics and music are unpredictable and yet accessible," he continues.

Road warriors who like to play out as much and often as they can, spanning the entire U.S. four times in support of Wolves, as well as an Australian tour to boot, the band is also known for their charitable contributes to local Portland, Oregon-based Tucker Maxon Oral School, a privately funded institution for hearing-impaired children. Crown Point donated thousands of dollars to the non-profit in 2012 alone.

"The only thing that matters as much as music, to us, is using music to accomplish tangible good. We're honored to work with Tucker Maxon Oral School," Davidson stresses. "It's amazing to be able to hang out with the kids at [the school] on a regular basis and know that in some small way, we're helping them to receive a world-class education."

Today is a sad day in the music community. Lead vocalist Mitch Lucker of Suicide Silence has passed away due to an unforeseen accident. The band had chosen to make a statement over facebook, including the following:

"There's no easy way to say this. Mitch passed away earlier this morning from injuries sustained during a motorcycle accident. This is completely devastating to all of us and we offer our deepest condolences to his family. He will be forever in our hearts.

R.I.P. Mitchell Adam Lucker - We Love You Brother
"

The band was supposed to be a supporting act for the Monster Outbreak tour along with Memphis May Fire, As I Lay Dying, Attila, and Asking Alexandria. There has been no further news in regards to the tour or if the band chooses to continue without their brother. We pay all of our respect to those around him that were affected most by his death. And to all of the fans out there, keep strong. Mitch will be greatly missed by us all.
